This Saturday, April 12, 2025 the St. Augustine Festival of Chariots (Rathayatra) filled the streets with melodious kirtan and a joyous atmosphere. During the procession, the beautifully decorated chariot carrying Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra, was accompanied by the Hare Krishna mantra, graceful youth dancers, and colorful flags and flowers calling the attention of the spectators that lined the route.
After the parade, the festiveness continued with more chanting, and the distribution of sumptuous free vegetarian food for all of the participants. There was a live flute performance and a captivating theatrical play. Additionally many books were distributed. Face painting was available for children and beautiful detailed henna designs were offered for anyone. The vibrant and uplifting atmosphere continued as the street mantra music procession (harinam) unfolded in St. George Street.
As every year, the Harinam is always the spotlight of this particular Rath. The enthusiastic chanting of all the devotees inspired many visitors and vendors to join the chanting and dancing, while many others clapped enthusiastically, and offered books and smiles. Harinam is a celebration of love, and the simple act of chanting the Holy Name has the power to bring people together.
This particular Festival of Chariots has become a favorite among attendees because of its intimate nature in downtown historic St. Augustine—thanks to the closed road—allows everyone to peacefully enjoy the sanctified food (prasadam) and all the activities offered right in front of the park. The setting invites a deeper connection, inspiring each another to chant, dance and celebrate in devotion to the Lord of the Universe.
